Marguerite Makes a Book (Getty Trust Publications: J. Paul Getty Museum)
If you’re children are studying the Middle Ages this book will make a wonderful addition to your Medieval library. It’s a sweet and simple story that is well written and beautifully illustrated. Even little Isaac (21 months at the time of writing this) loves to climb onto my lap to hear what is happening to Marguerite. Our eldest boy aged 10 has loved this book too, but it is perhaps most appropriate for interested 7-9year olds or as a read-aloud to anyone under ten years old.
Set in Paris in the Middle Ages the daughter of an Illuminator Papa Jacques; Marguerite displays a loving gentle character and great skill learnt under her father’s fastidious example. It includes a great description of how the colours were made; just crying out for you to follow; though I wish you greater success than we had!
I thoroughly recommend this book to enhance knowledge of this period and an understanding of the skill of Illumating.
